AE 403 - Advanced Recording Studio Music Production Introduction to the art of music production. Through classroom instruction and practical experience utilizing lab time within the studio complex and off-campus, the student will learn the fundamentals of record album production and the role of a traditional music industry Producer. Topics to be covered will include band-répertoire analysis of song-form structures, analysis of chord structures and melodic form and growth, song improvement techniques using musical form, harmony, and melodic variation, and using orchestration techniques to enhance musical interest and excitement. Specific skills covered will include rehearsal techniques, music arrangement changes using DAW tools, direct instrument replacement, the addition of more musician-performed parts, and the possible addition of computer-based sounds via MIDI whether by programming or real-time entry. Students will also learn how to develop recording project budgets that include rehearsals, studio tracking, studio musician costs, mixing, and mastering. Session organization and communication/client relations skills are an important part of the music producer’s role. This course will strive to culminate with the production of an EP for a student-sourced musical group. Prerequisite(s): AE 303 Lecture Hours: 3 Lab Hours: 2 Credits: 4
